At some point during the development of the original PlayStation, Sony made the decision to lớn switch from cartridges khổng lồ optical discs. Not only did this make the cost of producing games significantly cheaper, but it also drastically increased the amount of storage space available khổng lồ developers, with each disc capable of holding 700MB of data, which was more than ten times the storage on a standard N64 cart.

Despite the huge increase in storage though, some developers still needed more, which led to lớn numerous PS1 games being released on multiple discs. In North America alone, there were more than 50 such titles, with each one coming in a special multi-disc jewel case. For collectors looking khổng lồ make sure they're not being duped or those who are curious about the console's history, these are all of the North American PlayStation 1 games that came on more than one disc.

Updated December 7, 2022, by Tom Bowen: Long before clip games were downloaded onto hard drives or burned onto discs with Gigabytes of capacity, it wasn't at all uncommon for games to lớn come on more than one disc. This trend first began back in the eighties and nineties with many PC games needing lớn be installed using stacks of floppy discs, though it eventually petered out in the early two-thousands with the release of high-capacity DVDs. Before it did though, it enjoyed one final hurrah, with more than fifty multi-disc games being released on the PlayStation 1. It's worth noting that multi-disc games vì still pop up from time to lớn time even khổng lồ this day, but no trang chủ console had more of these things than Sony's very first little gray box.

Of course, Resident Evil 2 is one of the many PS1 survival horror games with multiple discs, though it's far from the only one. Parasite Eve & Parasite Eve 2 each has four discs, while Fear Effect and Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix boast eight between them. Koudelka is another PS1 game with four discs, though it could perhaps be argued that it's more RPG than survival horror.

When people think of PS1 games with multiple discs, the system's three mainline Final Fantasy titles are usually the first to spring khổng lồ mind. Final Fantasy VIII & Final Fantasy IX each boasts four discs, which is the same number as Sony's much-loved JRPG title, The Legend of Dragoon. Other notable examples of PS1 RPGs with more than one disc include Chrono Cross, Xenogears, & the two Lunar games, Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue.

Armored Core: Master of Arena (2 Discs) Covert Ops: Nuclear Dawn (2 Discs) Metal Gear Solid (2 Discs) Syphon Filter 2 (2 Discs) With 3d technology still very much in its infancy, most action games from the nineties tended lớn use a third-person perspective rather than first. Due khổng lồ the games' linear nature, most were able lớn fit onto a single disc, though there were still a handful that needed more than one. The most notable of these is definitely Metal Gear Solid, with disc 2 beginning shortly after the player's second encounter with xạ thủ Wolf. Another multi-disc PS1 game that emphasized stealth was Syphon Filter 2, although neither the trò chơi nor the series it belongs to lớn had quite as big an impact as Hideo Kojima's masterpiece.

Chronicles of the Sword (2 Discs) In Cold Blood (2 Discs) Juggernaut (3 Discs) Riven: The Sequel lớn Myst (5 Discs) Prior to lớn the release of the original PlayStation, the adventure trò chơi genre had reigned supreme. Due to lớn some of the difficulties that arose when trying to translate the genre's point-and-click control scheme over to a mouseless system, however, it slowly began to fade away, with fewer và fewer releases as the nineties came lớn a close. Even so, that didn't stop Riven: The Sequel to lớn Myst from becoming the PS1 trò chơi with the most discs (five), with Juggernaut (three), Chronicles of the Sword (two), và In Cold Blood (two) also requiring more than one 700MB disc.

BrainDead 13 (2 Discs) Dracula: Resurrection (2 Discs) Dracula 2: The Last Sanctuary (2 Discs) Fox Hunt (3 Discs) Psychic Detective (3 Discs) The X-Files Game (4 Discs) RELATED: Good Games With Hilarious Live-Action Cutscenes

One of the biggest advantages of the switch from cartridges lớn discs was the huge increase in storage. It may not seem lượt thích much by today's standards, but 700MB was a lot of space back in the day and developers soon realized that they could use this increased storage to lớn include full-motion videos in their games. Not only did this lead khổng lồ the popularization of FMV cutscenes and, with it, narrative-driven video clip games, but it also caused a huge increase in the number of interactive movie games. These included Fox Hunt and Psychic Detective, both of which required three discs in total.

Colony Wars (2 Discs) G-Police (2 Discs) Novastorm (2 Discs) Star Wars: Rebel Assault II - The Hidden Empire (2 Discs) The Hive (2 Discs) Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger (4 Discs) Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom (4 Discs) While SNES & N64 owners were enjoying Nintendo's fantastic Star Fox games, PS1 owners had khổng lồ make vì chưng with the likes of Colony WarsG-Police. Neither was terrible, though when compared khổng lồ Star Fox & Star Fox 64, they weren't exactly great either. Thankfully, towards the kết thúc of the console's lifecycle, players did get a few more options, the picks of the bunch being Star Wars: Rebel Assault II - The Hidden EmpireWing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom, which, lượt thích its predecessor, came on four trò chơi discs.

Command & Conquer (2 Discs) Command & Conquer: Red Alert (2 Discs) Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Retaliation (2 Discs) Driver 2 (2 Discs) Golden Nugget (2 Discs) Gran Turismo 2 (2 Discs) Heart of Darkness (2 Discs) Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus (2 Discs) Rival Schools: United by Fate (2 Discs) You Don't Know Jack (2 Discs) Given the breadth of content that each one has lớn offer, it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise lớn learn that the PS1's three Command & Conquer games each require two discs. That Driver 2 & Gran Turismo 2 also come on more than one disc is a lot less predictable, however, as too is the multi-disc nature of Rival Schools: United by Fate. Lượt thích the aforementioned Command và Conquer games, it comes on two discs, making it the only PS1 fighting game to need more than one disc.
