Cam: Well here we are, Patch, faced with the unenviable task of telling Aussies around the country that Left 4 Dead 2: the heavily edited Australian version (or, the 'ruined version', as we hotline it) isn't worth the plastic the disc is printed on; that the game has been butchered so badly that we've found it hard khổng lồ enjoy.

Am I being hyperbolic? Not really – we were frankly shocked at just how badly Valve slashed and burned its way through this game. We obviously knew what had been taken out: wound detail, decapitations, dismemberment, dead bodies remaining on the ground etc., but the reality is so much worse. These elements, you see, have just been pulled wholesale – leaving a hollow shell of a game. It feels like a rush job, và it's particularly galling because it didn't have to lớn be this way. It appears that EA was more concerned with getting the trò chơi on store shelves on time than it was with the finished product. Changes this drastic simply weren't necessary to get this trò chơi classified, nor did they have khổng lồ be rushed through this badly. Instead, this heavily edited version represents not only a massive overreaction, but a shoddily implemented overreaction at that.

Patch: Look, I'm no sadist – I don't get off on violence, but I do like decapitating zombies. That's not wrong. I must have been leaking the lizard when the Australian Classifications Board suddenly deemed the undead 'too realistic' to be savaged by virtual machetes & cricket bats. Censorship sucks. You're right though, Cam – Left 4 Dead 2 is a compromised experience; in the last couple of days we've spent extended sessions with both L4D games, & the extent of this censorship is severe. Is there anything wrong with the gameplay? Yes. Is it enough khổng lồ prevent you from playing the game? Not really. But that's not reason enough for me khổng lồ get behind this game. When I launch a grenade at a group of zombies, I expect results. I expect impact; if not limbs flying, then certainly flaming corpses or a satisfying gush of blood. What happens in the Australian Left 4 Dead 2? The target zombies disappear - I mean completely and instantaneously vanish BEFORE the grenade hits them. That is, in a word, absurd. & zombies are flame retardant, apparently. Smashing a Molotov or detonating a can of petrol sends zombies into an arm-waving hissy fit before rapidly fading away. No flames, though.

Cam: The upshot of all these glitchy-looking edits is that your opponents in this game have no weight, no physicality, no believability. The Classification Board is forever concerned with games where the kích hoạt is too 'high impact', but the flipside is an experience like this where there's essentially no impact. Kill a zombie và its body will fade away as it hits the ground (if it doesn't disappear before being hit, that is). It makes the experience comical & makes your actions feel like a farce. Well that's occasionally what the zombies in this game do – they start to fade, but instead of just fading into nothingness, they flash đen before they disappear. One word - shoddy. By now, all these examples should be painting a pretty clear picture of just how poorly và transparently the edits have been shoved into this game.

But before we go any further, let's take a look back at the original Left 4 Dead. What a game that was. We liked it so much we scored it 9.2 & ranked it as the third best trò chơi of 2008. Left 4 Dead was classified as MA 15+ và included the following: the ability to blow zombie heads off, the ability khổng lồ shoot zombie limbs off, wound detail on enemies, corpses that would remain on the ground (at least for a while), graphic sprays of blood that would coat the walls & fleck the screen. Why, then, has Left 4 Dead 2 been butchered so badly? Why is it necessary for it lớn have NO decapitations (whether via melee implement or shotgun), NO dismemberment, NO wound detail, drastically toned down blood và corpses that fade away instantly? Cam cont'd: All this stuff has been ripped out, & replaced by... Nothing, và it really colours the entire experience. For instance, playing through the new campaduanromanplaza.vns, I found myself thinking that they just don't have the same dense atmosphere as those of the original, và that there's something lacking. Is that actually the case? Or is that feeling just a result of the changes rammed down the game's throat? Patch: Part of the reason why Left 4 Dead was such a joy lớn play was, as you put it, in the atmosphere; this feeling of foreboding và dread as you'd inch around a corner, just lớn be confronted with a surge of zombies. It was dark, grisly, gory and intense. Without the gore, the intensity is dramatically lessened. The pressure is off. It feels at times, in Left 4 Dead 2, that enemies are no more than gnats – meaningless, impact-free deterrents that can be shooed aside between safe rooms. I don't feel scared anymore. That's a real problem for me – và frankly, it's not as much fun without the impact.

The core chơi game is just fine – as it was in the original Left 4 Dead. There are enough improvements, expansions and additions khổng lồ make each of the game's five settings a lot of fun (for more on modes & missions, kiểm tra out the U.S. Team's review). However, for all the buzz around melee weapons, the AI characters never use them. Not once. (Not that you should really be playing alongside AI characters.) New Infected, such as the Jockey and Charger feel like they rely purely on surprise khổng lồ gain the upper hand, giving you no practical defence if you happen to round the wrong corner & end up in their path. The new modes are all well and good too – lượt thích we said, the game play is sound – but once again, without the atmosphere, this game might as well be a carnival sideshow air-rifle game. So yeah, I'm angry about this impasse; in theory the game is great – but what has been done to it is awful. If the zombie horde was too realistic, then they should've tinted them green or pink or red, perhaps exaggerated their head kích thước or changed the style of their facial features. Or hell, some time should have been spent reeling it back a little. Instead, Left 4 Dead 2 has been edited with the finesse of a drunk Uwe Boll with his hands taped over his eyes & a keyboard strapped khổng lồ his feet. Australians deserve to make their own decisions about content, with đầu vào from the ratings advisory process we have in place. If the current system, limited lớn MA 15+ as a maximum, is failing lớn meet the public's demands, then the system must change lớn accommodate the demands of the greater public.
